Adding Alt Tags
Alt Tags are HTML based atributes that help to make your content more accessible by providing audio or text descriptions of images for people who need visual assistance. They’re also useful in helping students search for images, by associating more textual quality to an image. For more information on Alt Tags, please check out Blackboard’s documentation.
Please refer to this document if you’re interested in adding alternative descriptions to your Powerpoint slideshow.
Fixing Headings in Ally
To make documents accessible in E-Readers, files need to adhere to a correct heading format that Ally can recognize. If Ally is reporting that a document is having issues with its headings or their “levels” then this formatting is likely not set correctly.
In the video above, we discuss a way to set these headings without changing the visual layout of the page itself.
Read more about fixing headings in a Word document here. Alternatively, this document discusses how to add headings to a data table.
Fixing PDFs without Re-scanning a Document
Depending on your circumstances, some PDFs can be fixed without having to re-scan the document itself.
Specifically, this applies to:
- Cases where you still have access to the original document (timecode 1:04). Read more about uploading a tagged .pdf here.
- Cases where the original document in a peer-reviewed journal like JSTOR (timecode 4:08). Read more about that here.
- Cases in which it wouldn’t be too difficult to recreate the formatting of a shorter document by copy/pasting from an alternative format (timecode 5:57).
